How to Help Your Employees Grow Professionally

As the leader of your team, you know that there is more your role than just giving orders. As the captaining role model of those who follow you, your potential to help your employees develop into more professionally competent people is paramount. The following are some of the most powerful things that a leader of any team can do in order to make sure that their team not only gets the job done, but steadily develops into a far more capable, wise, and seasoned group of professional individuals than before.

Show that you have confidence in their abilities

Naturally, the beginning of your time as the leader of newcomers will involve some necessary tests of trial and error. As your team members gradually learn from their inevitable mistakes and begin to come into their own, it is vital to loosen the reins just a bit and allow them to to see that you trust them.

Too little trust is counterproductive. Though it may feel a bit uncertain to both you and your team members, the moment that you give them a greater sense of autonomy will be crucial for their growth into self-motivating, self-confident professionals.

Make sure that the team is always being tested

Growth is impossible without challenge, and that applies your employees. You don’t necessarily have to go as far as sabotaging your employees’ working conditions, but it is important to gauge their personal areas of comfort. Too much comfort builds complacency, and complacency is the antithesis to development. Take some time to see how your employees can handle having certain workplace conveniences or due processes temporarily unavailable or interrupted.

Encourage them to reach out and network

No professional individual can reach the height of their potential unless they make a point to network, and this is a lesson that must be passed on to any group of employees that you want to grow. Let your employees know about any networking events, both in the organization or in the immediate area, and encourage them to attend so that they can make new connections.

Have each employee shadow someone who plays their role on a higher level

Equally important to building a personal network is the guidance of a mentor. Though you may be the team’s leader, each of those employees may be able to gain even more by having a senior worker with an aligning career path personally mentor them; if at all possible, try to arrange that they get in contact with these senior workers.

The mark of a fantastic leader is not just a person with a long track record of completed group projects under their belt, but someone who has left a genuine impact on their subordinates. In a manner of speaking, a great leader who takes five novices under their wing will leave behind five more great leaders when they leave.
