Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain.  John “Hondo” Havlicek.  Oscar “Big O” Robertson. “Pistol” Pete Maravich.  Julius “Dr. J” Erving.  Larry “Legend” Bird.  Earvin “Magic” Johnson.  Clyde “The Glide” Drexler.  “Sir” Charles Barkley.  Michael “Air” Jordan.  David “The Admiral” Robinson.  Shaquille “Big Diesel” O’Neal.  LeBron “King” James.  All great NBA players with great nicknames.  So what about our guy?  What about Dirk? He’s quickly climbing the ranks of the all-time greats in the minds of anyone and everyone you ask. Unguardable.  One of a kind.  Best shooting big man ever.  Sure-fire hall-of-famer.  It’s time for Dirk Nowitzki to take his rightful place among the elite of the NBA and have a true nickname worthy of his lofty status.  No, not the “Blonde Bomber.”  You can’t give a nickname based on hair color to a guy who half the time sports a buzz cut. And no on “The Big German” as well.  That’s like taking away “The Dream” from Hakeem Olajuwon and renaming him the “Tall Nigerian.”  And don’t even get me started on “The Diggler.”  Dirk needs a real legit, creative nickname that sticks.  One that actually becomes part of his identity.  Why doesn’t he have one already?  He’s been to the Finals.  He’s won an MVP.  Granted most of the players I mentioned before do have a least one ring (maybe soon for Dirk), but not all of them do.  And what about players like George “Ice Man” Gervin, Karl “The Mailman” Malone and Chris “CP3″ Paul. Great nicknames tagged to guys who have never hugged the Larry O’Brien Trophy either.  Heck Dirk’s own supporting cast members have solid nicknames – The Jet, The Matrix, J-Kidd. Is it because Dirk’s not a marketing darling?  Do we need Nike to put him in a TV spot and tell America what he should be called?  C’mon DFW we’re better than that.  I’m throwing down the gauntlet and challenging Mavs Nation to come up with a nickname for our adopted favorite son.  I’ll print it in ScoreBoard Magazine.  I’ll post it on this site.  I’ll give props to whoever the creative genius is that comes up with the best name.  We’ll start a true grass roots campaign and force the name into the mouths of Sir Charles on TNT and Magic on ESPN.  So let’s go viral – send this to your friends.  Post the link on your Facebook page. Let’s hear from you Mavs fans!
